Who we are
Citizens Advice Gateshead is a local charity with a national name and a proud history. For over 60 years, we’ve been part of the Citizens Advice network, a trusted source of free, confidential, and impartial advice since 1939. While we meet the high standards expected of all Citizens Advice services, we’re also deeply rooted in our own community, working independently to support people across Gateshead and beyond.
Our mission is to mobilise knowledge that powers change. We help individuals navigate life’s challenges, influencing systems that don’t work, and inspiring action toward a fairer, more inclusive society. Whether it’s through advice, advocacy, or community partnerships, we’re here to make sure everyone has the support they need to move forward.
It’s this deep connection to our community that drives initiatives like Winter Warmer - practical, compassionate responses to real local need.
Why we’re here
Fuel poverty remains one of the most pressing challenges facing households across the UK. In 2025, 11.2% of households in England (around 2.78 million homes) are expected to be living in fuel poverty. While the average fuel poverty gap has fallen slightly in real terms, the number of people struggling to afford adequate heating continues to rise.
The North East consistently ranks among the regions with the highest levels of fuel poverty. Here in Gateshead, we see the impact every day - families forced to choose between heating and eating, older residents living in cold homes, and parents skipping meals to keep the lights on. At Citizens Advice Gateshead, we’ve seen a year-on-year increase of 43% in people contacting us about energy issues, food bank referrals, and accessing charitable support.
Our Winter Warmer campaign is a direct response to this crisis. Through fundraising events like this ball, we raise money to build and distribute Winter Warmer Packs - filled with essentials like hats, gloves, hot drinks, and supermarket gift cards - to those most in need. These packs offer more than warmth; they offer dignity, comfort, and a reminder that our community cares.
By joining us, you’re helping us send a clear message: while the weather may be bitterly cold, the generous spirit of the North East is warmer than ever.
